History of Chalk
- Originally called the Railway hotel and it was constructed in 1890.
- In 1977 the Railway changed its name to the Recovery and then back to the Railway in the 1990s.
- Given there is a Railway hotel in almost every town in Australia and based on our concept for the hotel renovation we could not see how the name Railway would appeal to our new target market or that it would be unique enough for such an amazing venue, therefore the team did some brainstorming.
- The name Chalk was selected from a bunch of names as we thought there were a number of connections with the hotel and we also thought the name Chalk could be linked into our marketing plan.
- In fact, we have called our premium cocktail bars – Dust and Powder Room, our a la carte restaurant Sticks (ie Chalk sticks) and our retail bottle shops – Chalk & Cheese. The reason Chalk was part of the brainstorming list was because of the Chalk used on the Gabba Cricket Pitch, the Gabba for the AFL field, Joe Richards Menswear next door has been there for 77 years and tailors used to use chalk on suit hems and Dr Gorden Chalk (the shortest serving Queensland Premier – 8 days in total) was the local member back in the 1950s.
